Houska Automotive donates 16th vehicle for Project Self-Sufficiency

FORT COLLINS — Houska Automotive has donated a 2010 Toyota Corolla to a participant in nonprofit Project Self-Sufficiency, which provides single parents in Larimer and Weld counties with support and resources.

Lupe Ybarra received the vehicle June 24 during Colorado State University’s Lagoon summer concert series.

“Project Self-Sufficiency has had the privilege of helping Lupe navigate her educational journey, from earning her GED to completing her associate’s degree in radiologic technology and finishing her bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy,” PS-S lead adviser Robin Adams said in a prepared statement. “This generous donation from Houska Automotive has been an incredible help in allowing her to complete her dreams.”

Ybarra recently started a full-time career as a radiation therapist with UCHealth Oncology. The vehicle will allow her to take her children safely to and from school, commute to work and to essential appointments, and continue building a stable future for her family.

“The Houska Automotive team is proud to be able to donate a vehicle to a Project Self-Sufficiency family for the 16th year,” L.J. Houska, vice president of Houska Automotive, said in a prepared statement. “Our lives are busy, especially with children. It’s critical to have reliable transportation to keep up with schedules and routines. Hopefully this car will make Lupe’s life a little easier. Helping our community members with transportation is what Houska has done for the past 70-plus years.”

Added Ybarra in a news release, “The transition from full-time student to full-time employee came with challenges. When my transmission unexpectedly failed shortly after graduation, it created a major obstacle at a time when I was still trying to get financially established.

“To everyone at Houska Automotive and Project Self-Sufficiency, thank you for investing in people like me,” she said. “Your kindness and generosity are changing lives, and I am incredibly grateful to be one of those lives.”
