Boulder awards $5M in grants to nonprofits

BOULDER — The City of Boulder has awarded $3.04 million from its Health Equity Fund and $1.99 million from its Human Services Fund in competitive grants to local nonprofit agencies for 2026. The funds will support community programs that serve Boulder community members in need and address systemic inequities for long-term impact.

“By investing these grant funds in our local nonprofits, we are strengthening the organizations that work every day to advance health equity and meet our communities most basic needs,” Markisha Key-Hagan, human services investment senior project manager of Housing and Human Services, said in a written statement “The city is proud to be able to allocate funding in a time of rising demand and economic uncertainty. This support ensures that individuals and families can access essential resources and experience better health outcomes.”

The HEF uses revenue from the city’s Sugar Sweetened Beverage Product Distribution Tax to provide grants for programs promoting health equity for Boulder community members experiencing health disparities. Through grants and other support for nonprofit agencies, the HEF aims to reduce chronic disease rates and disparities and to improve health equity for people experiencing systemic socio-economic and health barriers. 

The HSF provides grants in areas such as increased economic stability, mobility and resilience; increased ability for people to obtain and maintain housing; advancement of personal growth, development and leadership potential; safe environments for people with diverse identities; and increased positive physical, mental or behavioral health and well-being.

In addition to the competitive grant awards, the city is allocating $902,021 in non-competitive Health Equity Fund awards for food voucher, congregate meal and city recreation programs; and $450,000 in a non-competitive Human Services Fund award toward family homelessness prevention.
