Five Interview Tips

Tell Me About Yourself.
Rock this question at the onset of the interview and the rest will be smooth sailing. Blow this one and it will be hard to regain your footing. Link your response back to the job description. This isn’t about you. It is more about THEM.

Write it Down.
You don’t want to memorize answers or sound robotic. But, you also don’t want to get in your car after the interview and kick yourself for leaving out the best examples or talking points. Write down answers to the top 10 or 20 interview questions. Write down accomplishments that match up to the skills and qualifications for the job. What you write will be less likely to be forgotten during the stress of the interview.

Emit Passion and Excitement.
Express interest and show enthusiasm for the job. Don’t ooze. It is possible to go overboard. But, just having the skills is not enough. Hiring managers like to imagine that you really, truly want this job over all others. This in turn will make them want you over all other candidates. Hopefully.

Research the Company.
It is a major turnoff when a candidate has not taken the time to learn about the company before the interview. It communicates a lack of interest and a lazy work ethic. Know what the company does and how you can help them do it better.

Ask for the job.
It is always a good idea to ask a few questions at the end of the interview. It shows interest and that you are a serious candidate who is looking for a good fit. You can take it one step further and actually ask for the job. Wrap up the interview by saying, “I can really see myself working here. I would really like to be part of this team. I look forward to hearing back from you about next steps.”
