United Football League bringing franchise to Colorado
COLORADO SPRINGS — Starting in the upcoming 2027 spring season, the United Football League will feature a new team in Colorado Springs.
The UFL is adding franchises in Colorado and Rhode Island and eliminating teams in Houston and Birmingham, Alabama.
“The team will play at Weidner Field, a sports and entertainment venue in downtown Colorado Springs and home to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC,” according to a league news release. “At 6,035 feet above sea level, Weidner Field sits more than 750 feet higher than Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, meaning it will become the highest-elevation home for a pro football team when the UFL first steps on the field of play next March.”
The Colorado Springs team name will be revealed next month.
“Bringing professional football to Colorado Springs is a vote of confidence in our city and in what we have built downtown,” Colorado Springs mayor Yemi Mobolade said in the release. “A UFL team will put Colorado Springs in front of a national audience, bring fans to Weidner Field and give southern Colorado a professional football team to call its own.”
