Greeley’s 16th Street has partial roundabouts; work is not done yet

GREELEY — Some work recently wrapped up on 16th Street north of the University of Northern Colorado campus, but other work remains to be done.

The $9.7 million project will include two new roundabouts, landscaping and outdoor art. Funding includes a $2 million grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Work is complete on the north side of the street, and the street is open to westbound traffic and pedestrians. Workers are installing drains on Ninth Avenue, and they’ve resumed working on Saturdays to keep the project on track, according to information provided by the city.

Workers have removed or bagged traffic signals on the street, and the intersections now are partial roundabouts. In addition, remaining light poles have been removed on the south side of 16th Street, and temporary lighting is in place.

At the same time, workers are focused on sidewalks and demolishing curbs and gutters on the southern half of the street starting at 10th Avenue and heading west toward 11th Avenue, according to the materials. They’ll also install underground electrical lines and irrigation between Eighth and Ninth Avenues.

The Greeley Downtown Development Authority gave $3,000 grants to 13 businesses that suffered from a loss of foot traffic during the first round of construction on 16th Street, Bianca Fisher, executive director, said at the time.
