2024 Community Builder Awards

In 2003, a young man in Fort Collins had nowhere to go after aging out of foster care. His story inspired the creation of The Matthews House, and for the last several years has offered assistance to youth in need. Today, over 1,800 youth and young adults in Northern Colorado are homeless, with one in 30 young adults having slept somewhere other than their home in the past month.

This year, the Matthews House worked with the Thompson School District, Poudre School District, Thompson Education Foundation, Larimer County, and various local nonprofit organizations to expand its services to help homeless youth, who cannot access adult homeless shelters.

“Our collaboration with school districts, Larimer County, and nonprofits has enabled us to create a comprehensive system that ensures safety and stability for our community’s most vulnerable youth and young adults,” said Nicole Armstrong, executive director. “Together, we’re building a network that not only addresses urgent needs but also provides the lasting support essential for young people to thrive. Through this united effort, we’re establishing a web of services, resources, and relationships dedicated to their well-being, making sure no one is left behind.”

The Matthews House was able to add two new locations to its services: The Landing in Loveland, which is a safe space for youth (15-20) to rest, recharge, and receive personalized support. It will operate as an overnight and day shelter beginning in January 2025. The House is a day shelter and resource center for youth (15-20) in Fort Collins.

The shelters will provide services including case management, mental and physical health services, employment services, nutritious meals and snacks, clothing and personal hygiene items, educational support and tutoring, mental health counseling, life skills workshops, and recreation and leisure activities.
