Fort Collins city manager Darin Atteberry resigns to take position with Elevations Credit Union

FORT COLLINS — City Manager Darin Atteberry is leaving the position that he’s held since 2004 to take a leadership role with Elevations Credit Union. His last day with the city will be Aug. 20.

Atteberry will become market president, Northern Colorado and senior vice president for government affairs and strategic relationships for the Boulder-based financial institution, which has more than $3 billion in assets.

Atteberry first joined the city of Fort Collins in 1996 as the assistant city manager and assumed the city manager role in 2004.

In Colorado, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 transgender individuals will experience an attempted or completed sexual assault in their lifetime. During April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the hopes of increasing conversations about this very important issue.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve Fort Collins over the past 25 years,” Atteberry said in a prepared statement. “I am deeply proud of the work my 2,500 colleagues and I have accomplished and am excited for the opportunity to serve our community and region in a new way.”

Atteberry helped steer the city through major changes in its operations, helping it to earn a prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality award in 2017, a feat twice accomplished by Elevations Credit Union.

He was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Colorado State University College of Business in 2013 and in 2016 he was elected as a Fellow with the National Academy of Public Administration. Atteberry recently received the Colorado Governor’s Citizenship medal, “recognizing him as a leader who serves the public with innovation, operational excellence and progressive vision,” according to a press release announcing his departure from the city.

Fort Collins mayor Jeni Arndt, in a prepared statement, expressed gratitude to Atteberry for his tenure and contributions.

“We just celebrated Darin’s 25-year work anniversary at the City,” Arndt said. “He has been a key leader here for almost a generation. He has been instrumental in shaping who we are today. I’m so grateful for his love and commitment to our community and I wish him and his family all the best.”

At Elevations, Atteberry will be responsible for developing relationships with stakeholders and potential partners inside and outside the organization to achieve strategic goals within Northern Colorado.

“We are thrilled to welcome such an innovative and creative leader to Elevations Credit Union to accelerate our growth in Northern Colorado and beyond,” Gerry Agnes, president and CEO of Elevations Credit Union, said in the press release. “Darin is an extraordinary leader who is deeply connected to the Fort Collins community and leaders throughout Colorado. There is no better person to lead our work in Northern Colorado and our companywide government affairs and strategic relationships.”

Elevations has been expanding its footprint in Northern Colorado, recently opening a new branch in Old Town Fort Collins, its third in the city.

The  City Council will appoint an interim city manager in the coming weeks.
