Innovation seminars planned at this year’s IQ

BOULDER — For the first time, participants in this year’s IQ Awards can participate in three seminars hosted by sponsors of the event.

IQ, which is short for “Innovation Quotient” is an annual event that recognizes innovative companies and products. The event is Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Hotel Boulderado, 2115 13th St. in downtown Boulder. The awards ceremony is 5 to 7 p.m.

However, during the day, participants can choose from three innovation topics and hear from subject-matter experts. The topics and locations are:

How dispatchable resources enable the clean energy transition

Platte River must prepare for the retirement of 431 megawatts (MW) of dispatchable, coal-fired generation by the end of the decade and address more frequent extreme weather events that can bring dark calms (periods when there is no sun or wind).

  • Innovation Technology Investments, presented by Dan Domagala, EKS&H. This seminar will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at EKS&H, 1155 Canyon Blvd., Suite 400, Boulder. Domagala is an expert in the technology industry and currently serves as chief information officer for EKS&H. He has programmed applications, architected systems and designed secure data warehouses for oil and gas, hospitality, telecommunications and education entities. He has led IT teams both large and small, from governmental entities to multinational conglomerates to entrepreneurial startups. In his role as a technology strategist and IT advisor, Domagala guides organizations on the effective use of technology to accomplish business goals.
  • Galvanize. This seminar will be at Galvanize Boulder, 1023 Walnut St., Boulder, from 2 to 3 p.m. Galvanize is a learning community for technology. Participants will learn about how Galvanize aligns work and learning by uniting education, experience and industry under one roof.
  • Intellectual Property, presented by Gina Cornelio and Lisa Osman, attorneys with Dorsey & Whitney. This seminar will be at The Hotel Boulderado, Executive Board Room, from 3 to 4 p.m.

The discussion will touch on patent, trademark, and copyright basics from “how to secure” to “how to enforce.” After the discussion, there will be a networking opportunity and refreshments.

The awards ceremony will follow the seminars and will include cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets for the awards event cost $49 online and $59 at the door, and can be purchased online here.

Among the awards will be Innovative Company of the Year, Incubator/Accelerator of the Year, and awards in five different product categories.
