Event to help businesses prepare for disasters

DENVER – Business owners and community leaders from Northern Colorado and the Boulder Valley dominate a panel of people affected by last September’s flooding who will share their stories and lessons learned on Sept. 30 in Denver.

The panel is part of a full-day Red Cross event called the “Rocky Mountain Business Preparedness Academy,” which aims to improve the preparedness of businesses, organizations and schools. It also will feature preparedness experts who will give presentations on emergency preparedness, mitigation and recovery.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the Cable Center, 2000 Buchtel Drive, Denver.

Panelists will include Diane Muno, owner of four retail businesses in Lyons and president of  Estes Valley Partners for Commerce; Connie Sullivan, co-owner of the St. Vrain Market and a Lyons Board of Trustees member; Chris Moody, worship pastor at Rocky Mountain Church in Estes Park; and Laura Levy, Larimer County Long Term Recovery Group manager.

“The Business Preparedness Academy offers a full day of training and information for any sized business, school, organization or place of worship to prepare for, respond to and recover from an emergency or disaster,” said Troy Staples, preparedness manager for the American Red Cross of Colorado, in a media statement. “At the end of the day, attendees will walk away with concrete steps they can implement to be better prepared to deal with disasters, in conjunction with the continued support of the American Red Cross.”

Among other scheduled presenters will be Lyons Mayor John O’Brien and officials from the American Red Cross, Children’s Hospital, the FBI, the Small Business Administration and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
