LAEC honors businesses for aiding Longmont community

LONGMONT – The Federal Aviation Administration, Trident Energy Services Inc., Deuter U.S.A. and Avocet Communications were honored for their contributions to nonprofit organizations by the Longmont Area Economic Council at its 15th annual Community Appreciation Awards luncheon Wednesday.

The LAEC also presented a special award to the city of Longmont’s Emergency Management Division for its work during the September flood last year.

And Eric Wallace, co-founder of Indian Peaks Brewing Co., parent company of Left Hand Brewing in Longmont, received the Tom Brock award for his business leadership and the company’s contributions to the community. The award is in honor of the late Tom Brock, one of the original founders of the Longmont Industrial Park Board, which now is the LAEC.

The FAA, which has 700 employees at its air-traffic control center in Longmont, was recognized for donating money and supplies to nonprofits. The FAA during the last year, for example, presented the OUR Center with $58,000 and 2,000 pounds of food. The Our Center helps people move toward self-sufficiency by tapping into community resources.

Trident Energy Services, which provides engineering and energy planning services, was recognized for its annual donations to Veterans Helping Veterans Now. The nonprofit was formed in Boulder in 2007 and moved to Longmont three years ago. The nonprofit connects veterans who need assistance with volunteers while addressing the unmet needs of veterans and their families through volunteer support and free mental-health and wellness services.

Longmont-based Deuter USA, the U.S. headquarters of Germany-based Deuter Sport GmbH, was recognized for coming to the aid of the community during the September flood. Deuter USA’s 13 employees were allowed to use company time to help clear debris from open space, and the company donated 200 backpacks and 250 wash bags to people affected by the flood.

Avocet Communications, a 30-year-old advertising, marketing and public relations firm in Longmont, was honored for its donations of $90,000 worth of in-kind services to nonprofits, helping them develop their brands and communicate their messages.
