Waterproofgate’ puts Ryder Cup fashions to shame

Corey Pavin & Company may be feeling a bit wet today. This year’s Ryder Cup, being held at the Celtic Mountain Resort in Wales, has been under a torrential downpour since play began earlier in the week.

Even with the rain, the U.S. vs. Europe competition has been able to squeeze in a few holes, but it seems as though the American raingear may not exactly have lived up to its name. Sun Mountain’s  waterproof gear, which was selected by U.S. team captain Pavin, has actually been retaining water – not such a great quality in raingear.

The jacket and trunks posed such a problem for the U.S. team that they chose to replace them during the round on the second day. “We were disappointed with the performance of them, and you know, we just fixed it,” Pavin told reporters during a morning rain delay. “They were not doing what we wanted them to do, so we went out and bought some more waterproofs.”

Not only were the waterproofs not, well, waterproof, but they weren’t exactly fashion forward, either. Butch Harmon, Tiger Woods’ former coach, said they looked like basketball practice uniforms and further described them as “not right.”

“Waterproofgate” gave the European team an opportunity to poke a little fun at the U.S. team, which they did gleefully. Adding insult to the U.S. team’s discomfort, the waterproofs members eventually donned came from the clubhouse of the Celtic Mountain Resort and were manufactured by ProQuip, the company that supplied the European team’s raingear.

Up until this point, the most controversy that had surrounded the Ryder Cup was whether or not Tiger Woods would be part of the U.S. team. Woods, whose extramarital escapades have been well documented, was eventually selected by Pavin as one of four additional players who did not automatically qualify for the tournament.

At least they didn’t leave him out to dry.
