LOUISVILLE – Gaiam Inc. (Nasdaq: GAIA), a Louisville-based retailer of health and natural goods, has repurchased approximately 500,000 shares of its common stock, launched its Gaiam TV streaming platform and begun distributing media content into Target’s entertainment department.
This brings the total number of shares repurchased by the company to approximately 5.32 million shares, or 23.4 percent of the 22.8 million shares currently outstanding.
In September, Gaiam launched GaiamTV.com, a website that allows consumers to browse and stream content from Gaiam’s media library and to create customized fitness and yoga playlists. The content will be available on iPad and iPhone apps as well, and on a dedicated Roku channel.
Gaiam has recently acquired digital rights to 800 new titles of LOHAS content, which makes approximately 2,000 titles available to digital retailers for download and through Gaiam TV for streaming. The company plans to add an application widget preloaded on Samsung Internet-enabled TVs and access through Verizon Fios later this year.
This week Gaiam also begins aggregating and distributing media content into Target’s entertainment department.
“Our expanded role with Target is a new and exciting sales channel for us,´ said Lynn Powers, chief executive at Gaiam, “We look forward to working with the independent studios on a broader aggregation strategy in the transformation of the media market at retail, including the digital space.”
