One-On-One: Interview with Jeff Katofsky, developer of the Future Legends sports park

Each month, BizWest asks a business leader to participate in a question and answer feature to help shed light on a business topic, an industry or add insight to a field of endeavor. This month, Jeff Katofsky, developer of the Future Legends sports park in Windsor, discusses the project.

BizWest: What is your current vision for the sports park?

Jeff Katofsky:  Future Legends is a multi-sport tournament training recreation and events facility that will serve as a hub for a full spectrum of professional and youth sports, for all ages, as well as many other recreation, community and entertainment pursuits. Our facility, as the premier sports complex in Colorado, will focus on these principal offerings:

• Sports programs, tournaments, competition, clinics and camps

• Sports performance and fitness training

• Youth and adult leagues, tournaments, and events

• Charity and special ability programming

• Community events

• Concerts and festivals

• Hospitality

• Retail

BW: Tell us about the timetable. How much of the park will be ready to play by summer next year, for example? What do you anticipate will be the completion date?

Katofsky: Most of the playing surfaces and fields will be done by late spring early summer 2022, with the hotels and retail to follow in later 2022 and the ESports Arena by spring 2023.

BW: What will the atmosphere be like with two professional teams making the park their home?

Katofsky: Hopefully exciting, engaging and energetic for the fans with winning sports teams playing before large crowds. The Owlz [baseball team] have a history of success with five championships in 15 years. We will try to continue that success at Future Legends and see if that rubs off on the Hailstorm [soccer team].

BW: We’re curious about the revenue side of this operation. What are the revenue sources? What share will be coming from each, generally speaking?

Katofsky: Our financial models are private.

BW: Project for us the visitation at the park. What share will be coming from local groups versus teams from out of state? From attendance at the pro events? From other activities at the park?

Katofsky: We project 1.2 million to 1.4 million visitors annually, about half of whom are from outside of Colorado.

BW: What will be the total investment when the park is complete?

Katofsky: Again, we keep our finances private.

BW: Is there anything else that people in Northern Colorado would be interested in knowing about the Future Legends development?

Katofsky: This is a 17-year project in the making and a life-long dream. We feel lucky to be creating Future Legends in Northern Colorado, a great place to live and visit. We hope to provide positive experiences and memories to millions of children and their families while also providing the highly trained or the hopeful the platform to go to the next level. Our all inclusive site is intended to provide families with a playcation to remember.
