DHL to purchase almost 100 Lightning eMotors trucks

LOVELAND — Freight giant Deutsche Post AG has agreed to buy an additional 89 electric trucks developed by Lightning eMotors Inc. as part of a larger electrification push.

In a statement, the Bonn, Germany-based DHL said it will buy the additional trucks after piloting nine of Lightning’s vans for delivery uses and intends to deploy them in New York and California.

“We are excited to expand our electric delivery van footprint and continue to realize our corporate sustainability goals and vision for a net zero-emission future,” DHL U.S. CEO Greg Hewitt said in a statement.

DHL previously said it intends to become zero-emission by 2050 and is planning to spend 6 billion euros over the next decade to reduce its immediate carbon emissions. Six billion euros is the equivalent of $7.09 billion.

The Loveland-based Lightning develops mid-category electric-powered vehicles. It is set to go public on April 21.
