Lucky’s confirms staff reductions at Niwot HQ
NIWOT — Lucky’s Market corporate leadership broke its silence Thursday, confirming in an emailed statement that the firm will shutter all but seven stores and that jobs at the Niwot headquarters will be cut.
Since news of the upcoming closures of 32 stores broke Tuesday, Lucky’s hadn’t responded to requests for comment from media outlets across the country, including BizWest. The closures were acknowledged on the company’s social-media accounts and with in-store signage.
“Lucky’s Market has announced that as part of its restructuring efforts, it began closing certain store locations Wednesday, Jan., 22, 2020,” the Lucky’s statement issued Thursday said. “After exploring multiple alternatives, the decision was made to close various stores, in addition to a reduction in staff at the company’s support office in Niwot.”
It is unclear how many jobs will be lost. Follow-up questions in response to Lucky’s statement Thursday went unanswered.
“For stores that are closing, a going-out-of-business sale has been put into effect,” Lucky’s statement said. “It is anticipated that the closing process for stores will take place over the next three weeks. Deep discounts on in-store merchandise during that time will allow customers to stock up on some of their favorite Lucky’s products before they are sold out.”
Lucky’s locations in Longmont, south Boulder and Wheat Ridge will close. The Fort Collins and north Boulder stores are among the seven that will remain in business.
In December, grocery giant Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) announced that it would sell its investment stake in Lucky’s, which was founded in Boulder by chefs Bo and Trish Sharon,
Kroger, the Cincinnati-based parent of King Soopers and City Market stores in Colorado, invested an undisclosed sum in Lucky’s to form a “strategic partnership” with the local chain in 2016.
