Dohn Construction merges with Denver builder

FORT COLLINS and DENVER — Fort Collins construction company Dohn Construction Inc. has merged with Denver Design Build LLC in a bid to build more projects across the northern Front Range.

The combined company will keep the Dohn Construction name, according to a press release from the new entity. Jeff Gates, one of the co-owners of Denver Design Build, is the nephew of Dohn Construction president Doug Dohn and chief financial officer Connie Dohn.

Gates will be the company’s field operations director for the Denver metro area, while former Denver Design Build co-owner Jeff Ayers will become the company’s director for new business.

In an interview with BizWest, Connie and Doug Dohn said the company had been interested in taking projects in the Denver area, but didn’t want to make its staff commute back and forth every day during the construction period.

“We started this business because I was working where I had to travel and had a commute, and it was really a brutal existence when you have to do that in the construction world,” he said.

The combined company now has 39 employees in Denver and 53 in the Northern Colorado area.

The Dohns have also set a plan to give day-to-day operations to their daughter and to Gates and Ayers, with the eventual goal of retiring and giving that trio full control of the company within five years.

“We’re not young chickens anymore, and this next generation has a lot of energy and a lot to offer,” Connie Dohn said.
