Sports Authority files for bankruptcy, could face shutdown
Sporting goods retailer Sports Authority has filed for bankruptcy, and the Englewood-based company’s woes reportedly could get much worse.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Sports Authority not only noted its intention to close 140 stores in its Wednesday morning filing. But the paper reports that the chain could shut down altogether “by the end of April” if a buyer for the rest of its business isn’t found in time.
News that Sports Authority was closing stores in Boulder, Denver and Greenwood Village broke last month. In addition to the doomed upscale SA Elite store in Boulder, the chain also has Sports Authority stores Boulder, Longmont and Greeley, as well as two in Fort Collins.
