Level 3 sells coal-mining business

BROOMFIELD – Level 3 Communications Inc. (NYSE: LVLT) has sold its interest in a coal mine in Wyoming to Ambre Energy Limited, an Australian coal and oil shale company.

Broomfield-based Level 3 sold its interest in the Black Butte Coal Co. in Point of Rocks, Wyoming, so it can focus more on its long-haul fiber optic network, the company said.

Ambre acquired a company called KCP Inc. from Level 3, which had  a 50 percent interest in the mine. Ambre will share the mine with Anadarko Petroleum.

The deal closed Nov. 14 and regulatory considerations were completed Nov. 23.
