Stock decimal pricing expected to increase market sales volume

The securities industry’s move toward decimal pricing began in 1996 when a congressional subcommittee was formed to look at the issue. In 1997 and 1998, hearings were held on proposed legislation that would direct the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to require that securities be traded in dollars and cents rather than fractions.

Industry representatives responded that they were already committed to converting to decimals, having identified several benefits in their research.
