Poudre Valley REA extends deadline for RFP for wholesale power

FORT COLLINS —  Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association Inc. has extended the deadline for its request for proposals for wholesale power supply.

The rural electric cooperative will accept applications until Sept. 30 for up to 117 megawatts of renewable generation to supplement or replace a portion of its current power supply.

Poudre Valley REA said in a press release that the primary reason for the extension is to give potential bidders the opportunity to understand and implement provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act.

“When it comes to the electricity we deliver to our members, we are not willing to compromise reliability and affordability,” Jeff Wadsworth, president and CEO of Poudre Valley REA, said in a written statement. “This RFP provides us an avenue to investigate our options so we can best meet the needs of our members as we plan for the future.” 

Poudre Valley REA provides electricity to more than 50,000 homes and businesses in Boulder, Larimer and Weld counties.

PVREA and its current power supplier, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc.,  along with other Tri-State members, developed contract flexibility through a partial requirements membership option. PVREA can use the flexible option to self-supply up to 50% of its load requirements, in addition to its current 5% self-supply option.

Poudre Valley REA seeks to source 80% carbon-free energy by 2030, with the RFP for wholesale power supply designed to help it achieve that goal.
