Rocky Flats group cautions against oil, gas drilling
BROOMFIELD — Members of the Rocky Flats Stewardship Council, a consortium of cities and counties charged with overseeing management of the former Rocky Flats nuclear-weapons plant, Monday passed a resolution cautioning against drilling for oil or natural gas beneath the plant in Jefferson County.
The Denver Post reports that the group passed unanimously — with Jefferson County abstaining — a resolution that cautions local governments, oil and gas operators and permitting agencies to “consider the unique conditions related to Rocky Flats” before approving any permit requests.
The council lacks enforcement power. Members include representatives from Arvada, Boulder, Broomfield, Golden, Northglenn, Superior, Thornton and Westminster, as well as Boulder and Jefferson counties.
