Westminster unveils plans for downtown

WESTMINSTER – The city of Westminster’s plans for a new downtown on the site of the former Westminster Mall took another step forward during a presentation Monday that outlined a development that includes multistory office and residential buildings, public spaces and shopping areas.

“This is a bold plan that lines up with the vision for a new downtown that our community has been calling for,´ said city manager Brent McFall. “At the end of this process, we will have a development opportunity that is unique not just in Colorado but in the country.”

City planners and representatives from urban planning firm Torti Gallas and Partners showed off the first draft of a master plan that will guide future development of the 105-acre site, located at U.S. Highway 36 and Sheridan Boulevard.

The master plan will provide a framework and vision for the new downtown as development occurs over the next 20 to 30 years. Key components of the plan include allowed land uses, public parks and plazas, access to transit, urban design, development flexibility, and taking advantage of the views the site has of the Front Range.

The draft plan will be presented to the public for comment in September during a pair of open houses.

The open houses are planned for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the MAC, 3295 West 72nd Ave., and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, at the City Park Recreation Center, 10455 Sheridan Blvd.

Following the public outreach, the draft plan will go to the planning commission and to city council for action in October.
