Geeks land in Greeley, Fort Collins
Break out the pocket protectors.Geeks on Wheels, a Lawrence, Kan.-based company that provides computer-assistance services, has expanded into Northern Colorado.
The company’s mobile computer services are available in Greeley, Fort Collins and Boulder, offering a “light-hearted approach to helping people understand their home computers.”
Director David Greenbaum said that Geeks on Wheels employs two full-time technicians and a part-timer in the Lawrence office, but he isn’t certain what the demand for service will be along the Northern Front Range of Colorado.
But the company is trying its best to drum up business. It’s been buying large four-color ads in several local daily newspapers and has advertised for technicians.
Geeks on Wheels was organized by the Lawrence World Journal’s cable-television division, which had begun installing cable modems in area homes.
“So we had these cable modems installed, and people were asking ‘Now how do I connect to the computer?’ and the technicians were cable technicians,” Greenbaum explained.Greenbaum said that the bulk of Geeks on Wheels’ business comes from home-based businesses that can’t afford to take several days off work while their Macs or PCs are repaired at a traditional store.
In the Lawrence area, fees for Geeks service run about $45 an hour. The Geeks on call in Northern Colorado will be dispatched through the home office in Kansas.
No word yet on whether Greenbaum’s new local hires will be required to wear white socks with black shoes, pocket protectors and glasses held together with masking tape.
