CSU names new Warner College of Natural Resources dean

FORT COLLINS – John P. Hayes, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences dean for Research, has been selected as the new dean of the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University.

Hayes, director of the Florida Agricultural Station in Gainesville, will begin his new position at CSU on June 1. He will replace Warner College Dean Joyce Berry, who served in the position from 2004 to 2006 and returned to the position in 2009. The University had initiated a nationwide search to replace Berry, who is retiring.

While at the University of Florida, Hayes also chaired the department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation and served as director of the Ordway-Swisher Biological Station, in addition to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level. He also served as the associate dean for international programs at Oregon State, in the College of Forestry.

Hayes’ scholarly background has focused on applied ecology, primarily related to wildlife ecology and forest science. Among the initiatives Hayes advanced at the University of Florida was development of the Florida Climate Institute, as well as two interdisciplinary clusters.
Hayes earned his Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology from Cornell University, a master’s degree in biology from Southern Oregon State College and undergraduate degree in wildlife science from Oregon State University.
