Election: Voters side with Fort Collins council on Hughes Stadium future in early results

FORT COLLINS — Fort Collins voters appeared in early voting to be siding with their City Council on how to redevelop the former Hughes Stadium property at the west edge of the city.

Two competing issues were on the ballot. The council referred measure, Question 2H, asked voters to ratify the recommendation of the city’s Civic Assembly. The assembly recommended a range of uses for the property. 

A citizen initiated issue would have undone the work of the assembly and required that the city commit 100% of the 165-acre site for use as a natural area.

Early results showed 67% of voters supporting the council’s position. The citizen-initiated issue, labeled Question 303 on the ballot, was failing with 54% of voters opposed.

Because the ballot questions were incompatible with one another, the one with the highest vote total would control.

Ballot Question 2H would permit multi-use development of the site, including up to 60 acres as a natural area, 30 acres for environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation, and 35 acres for a city park.

Ballot Question 303, were it to pass, would require the city to modify an ordinance passed by voters in 2021 and designate the entire 165 acres as a city natural area.
