Downtown Greeley restaurant space returns to its Asian cuisine roots

GREELEY — After a brief hiatus, Asian cuisine will return to the building in downtown Greeley that had become a staple for the food in Greeley at 1330 Eighth Ave.

Sala Thai, which has a location in Windsor, will open on Jan. 31.

Restaurant owners did not return calls and emails for comment. But Greeley’s Downtown Development Authority executive director confirmed the opening.

“We are thrilled to have Sala Thai opening their second location in Downtown Greeley,” DDA executive director Bianca Fisher said in an email response to questions. “We feel their new location is a perfect fit for their concept. I recently had lunch at their Windsor location before they announced their new location, and I thought their food was excellent.”

The building was more recently a Mexican restaurant called Herradura Mexican Restaurant, which closed after a May 29, 2024, storm that caused severe downtown flooding and damaged the building.

In a Facebook post on Aug. 22, the restaurant owners reported: “Due to the flooding (May 29th), we were forced to make the difficult decision to close our doors — one that was necessary not only for financial reasons but also for the well-being of our family.”

“Over the years, we poured our blood, sweat and tears into this restaurant, sacrificing much, but in return, we gained something even greater: unforgettable memories, wisdom and the honor of becoming a pillar of this wonderful community,” Herradura’s post said.

Prior to Herradura, the space had been a mainstay in Greeley as Canton Garden, which opened in 1995. The restaurant closed after 25 years in November 2020, the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sala Thai has been in Windsor for more than a decade.

According to Sala Thai’s website, they “offer traditional, fusional, and modern Thai dishes. Our modern dishes include options for our vegan, dairy free and gluten free customers. Most importantly we do not add MSG to any of our dishes. Special requests are available on all our dishes.”

The restaurant ownership announced that they were coming to Greeley in a new Facebook page in early January, which already has 137 followers.
