AG Weiser running for Colorado governor
DENVER — Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser threw his hat into the governor’s race this week.
First elected attorney general in 2018, Weiser, a former University of Colorado Boulder professor, declared this week his intent to join the Democratic primary race for the state’s top elected job, which term limits dictate that current Gov. Jared Polis must give up in 2026.
“There are many reasons why I’m running to lead this state I love, but the biggest reason is simple: I’m committed to fighting for the people of Colorado. As your attorney general, I’ve spent the last six years taking on big fights for the people of Colorado, standing up against irresponsible companies that harmed consumers, defending our freedoms, improving public safety, and protecting our land, air and water,” Weiser said in a prepared statement. “From day one, I’ve met my commitment to you to show up in every county, to listen to you, and to get results. This campaign will focus on engaging with you and having real conversations, to hear what’s on your mind, to learn how our state government can best serve you, and to get your ideas on how we can meet our challenges together.”
Weiser’s Boulder connections are myriad. In addition to a professorship at CU, he served a stint as the University of Colorado Law School’s dean. Weiser also helped found Silicon Flatirons, a CU-affiliated organization that promotes technology and innovation. He was Silicon Flatirons’ executive director before his appointment to the attorney general’s office.
According to the Colorado Sun, Fort Collins Mayor Jeni Arndt is one of the Weiser campaign’s co-chairs.
