Ball Corp. opens aerosol-can plant in India

BROOMFIELD – Ball Corp. (NYSE: BLL) on Thursday opened a plant in northwestern India that will manufacture aluminum aerosol cans.

The Broomfield-based company announced in a media release that the plant was opened near Ahmedabad, the sixth-largest city in India with a population of 5.5 million. In 2010, Forbes magazine ranked it third on its Fastest Growing Cities of the Decade list, and in 2012 the Times of India called the Ahmedabad the most livable city in the nation.

The plant initially employs 60 people and has a capacity to produce 50 million cans a year, the company said. Once fully operational in five to 10 years, Ball said, the plant could have a capacity of 300 million cans a year and employ nearly 250 people.

“With our strong foundation in aluminum aerosol manufacturing, this new plant allows us to enter the rapidly expanding India market and meet the needs of regional customers, as well as our existing global customers,” said Michael Feldser, senior vice president of Ball Corp. and chief operating officer of Global Metal Food & Household Products Packaging, in a media statement.

The company said it already had sales contracts in place with local customers in Ahmedabad and the surrounding region.

Ball and its subsidiaries – including Boulder-based Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. – employ 14,500 people worldwide and reported 2014 sales of $8.6 billion.
