Trader Joe’s Boulder opening delayed

BOULDER – A Trader Joe’s grocery store will open in Boulder next year, a company spokeswoman said Tuesday, an apparent delay from its previously announced October opening.

A 14,000-square-foot Trader Joe’s grocery was to open next month at 1906 28th St. on the site of a former Applebee’s restaurant, Twenty Ninth Street shopping center spokeswoman Kate Honea said in March. The restaurant has been demolished, and construction work is going on at the site.

Trader Joe’s plans to open four stores in Colorado in 2014 – including the Boulder store, Alison Mochizuki, a spokeswoman in Monrovia, California, said Tuesday. The company has not given a definitive opening date yet for the Boulder store, Mochizuki said.

Honea said she had no comment, when asked about the date discrepancy on Tuesday.

Boulder’s crowded grocery market includes three Whole Foods Market stores, three King Soopers stores, three Safeway stores, Sprouts Farmers Market, Natural Grocers By Vitamin Cottage, Lucky’s Market and Alfalfa’s Market.

Trader Joe’s started in 1958 in the Los Angeles area. It has 390 stores in 35 states.
