Plans for learning center move forward

BOULDER – A plan to build an early childhood learning center is moving forward, after an LLC formed by founders of the Acorn School for Early Childhood Development closed on the purchase of an 18,031-square-foot building at 2845 Wilderness Place in Boulder.

Wilderness Early Childhood Center LLC purchased the building from Bart MacGillivray for $2.03 million, according to Boulder County property records. The deal closed in late December.

The founders of the Acorn School, which is located at 2580 Iris Ave., Boulder, and other community groups are working to form the center, Acorn School executive director Matt Eldred said.

Eldred called the Wilderness project “a comprehensive early childhood system,” which will offer education, health-care and community support services in one building. The center will serve infants and children six and under. It will be open to all children, but will focus on at-risk families.

The center will follow the principles of the Early Childhood Council of Boulder County’s “Early Childhood Framework,” Eldred said. It has received more than $1.8 million from the city of Boulder and Boulder County, and it continues to solicit grants and funds from local and national foundations, businesses and individual donors.

The total project cost is estimated around $3.3 million, of which $2.2 million has been raised. The center is expected to be open by August.
