Startup Colorado ready to launch in November

BOULDER – Spreading Boulder’s entrepreneurial know-how throughout the state is the mission of a new program formed by local entrepreneurs and the University of Colorado.

Silicon Flatirons, a program of the University of Colorado Law School, announced on Oct 20 the creation of Startup Colorado, a program that will attempt to expand the breadth and depth of entrepreneurial networks throughout the state.

The goal is to have a meaningful impact on entrepreneurship and new company creation.

In preparation for Republic Services becoming the primary provider of residential recycling, yard trimmings, and trash, residents should now select the best cart size and service schedule for their household needs.

Initial efforts will focus on building “a critical mass” of entrepreneurs in Denver, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs, CU Law School dean Philip Weiser said.

“This is really a recognition of what has been happening in Boulder and an attempt to spread this throughout Colorado,” Weiser said.

Silicon Flatirons’ role will be “engaging, empowering and encouraging,” Weiser said.

Fostering grassroots collaboration will be emphasized, Weiser said. One idea for Startup Colorado is to help other cities build events like the Boulder New Tech Meetup and the Boulder Open Coffee Club, Weiser said. Those events give entrepreneurs the chance to meet, trade ideas and find potential partners and coworkers.

Weiser will serve on Startup Colorado’s board of directors along with Foundry Group managing director Brad Feld and Colorado Springs-based entrepreneur Jan Horsfall, founder and CEO of Gelazzi Inc., a gelato maker.

The program kicks off with an event at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Wolf Law Building’s Wittemyer Courtroom. Aneesh Chopra, chief technology officer of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, will deliver the keynote address.
