Seth Terry, a probate judge in Connecticut, was 50 years old in 1870 when a group of prominent businessmen in Chicago dispatched him to find a suitable place to settle the Chicago-Colorado Colony.
After selecting the area, he purchased the 60,000 acres that would become Longmont on behalf of the members of the Colony.
He became president of the Colony and active with others in establishing the town of Longmont.. He operated one of the first lumberyards in Longmont, a key to building the town.
According to his obituary, he was respected for his Christian character and personal worth. He was a charter member of the Longmont Methodist Church.
Terry was born in Enfield, Conn., Aug 27, 1820. While in Connecticut he was elected probate judge, and the title followed him. He was married to Clarissa Jane Burbank in 1856, and the couple made their home in Longmont until her death in April 1898. They had 11 children.
Terry married again to Frances Bartlett in September 1899. The couple moved to Mosca in South Central Colorado the same year. Terry died in 1901 of natural causes. He was 81.
