Brand You

Who knew we would all need marketing degrees in order to maneuver through our careers? What is all this talk about branding? Are we cattle? Or, products for sale?

I am not a marketing expert but here is what I know for sure. Personal branding goes far beyond the resume and how you manage your online image. Sure, these are important aspects of our overall “brand.” But what happens when you meet someone face to face? Does it all add up?

The real you should make your social media image pale by comparison. Often it is just the opposite. Is your photo from another decade? Does your online profile make you seem just a little too perfect? Are you trying too hard to impress potential readers with all your involvements and accomplishments?

Get off your computer. Interact with people in the community. Let every action and interaction personify your brand. Don’t tell me who you are. Show me. That’s branding. I love Tom Peters. Over a decade later his words still ring true.
