Evaluating Your Worth in Today’s Economy

If you were laid off from a job that paid well, you may be getting the message that you need to re-evaluate your salary expectations. There seems to be a consensus that HP employees, for example, have been paid inflated salaries for years. Sure, some tech salaries may have been on the high side but there is another viewpoint to consider.

Many Northern Colorado employers are used to being able to get a lot for their money. It is common practice around here to stick highly educated people in cubicles, feed them $32,000 a year, and expect them to work really, really hard. Oh, and these folks are supposed to smile and be happy they have jobs.

Job searchers should have realistic salary expectations. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, America’s Career InfoNet, and the local library are good resources for researching wage information. But organizations also need to get real. It’s a shame that so many employers expect so much and pay so little.
