CU instrument cluster ready to launch

BOULDER – The $32 million Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment built by the University of Colorado at Boulder is slated to launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Tuesday, Feb. 9.

The instrument cluster, known as an EVE, built as the first of three solar dynamic observatory instruments created at the university, will fly on NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.

The EVE instrument is designed to take measurements of the sun’s ultraviolet brightness and will provide space weather forecasters with potential communication and navigation outages caused by changes in ultraviolet radiation. This radiation can cause outages in radio communications and affect satellites orbiting the Earth.
