Business Reports receive 7 editorial, photo SPJ awards

DENVER — The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) presented seven awards to writers and photographers of The Boulder County Business Report and its Fort Collins-based sister publication, The Northern Colorado Business Report.

The awards, presented at a May awards dinner in Denver, were in the Division B category of newspapers with circulations of 10,000 to 99,000. Also competing in this category are The Daily Camera, the Boulder Planet, Longmont Times-Call, the Denver Business Journal and others.

Peter Kent, the Geek News columnist for both BCBR and NCBR, took the first place in the category of Business Reporting — Columns. Jerry W. Lewis, editor and co-publisher of BCBR, received third place in the same category.

Jeanie Straub, staff writer for BCBR, was awarded third place in Business Reporting — Feature Writing for her story about the Ward General Store being for sale.

Probably for the first time ever in Colorado, a business newspaper photographer captured first place in the category of Photojournalism — Sport Action Photography. Jonathon Castner, a freelance photographer for BCBR, received the honor for his ExecStyle cover photo of an English riding instructor making a jump on horseback at Cornerstone Farm.

Maggie Boys, a writer for The Northern Business Report, took the top first-place award in Business Reporting — General Reporting, for her article headlined “10 to 1” on how few women are represented on company boards.

David Badders, editorial cartoonist for NCBR, received first place in the category of Editorial Cartoons.

NCBR staff also was recognized with a second-place award in the Editorials category.
