Ptarmigan golf club sells to Virginia group

WINDSOR — Ptarmigan Country Club, a private 158-acre facility that features an 18-hole golf course, has been sold to a company that now owns 39 clubs around the country.

Herndon, Virginia-based Heritage Golf Group, which bought three other facilities in Colorado two years ago, acquired Ptarmigan Country Club at 5416 Vardon Way for $6.1 million from the Flack family, who owned the club for more than 20 years.

The club has a Fort Collins mailing address but is within Windsor’s city limits.

With its course designed in 1979 by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, the club opened its front nine holes in 1987 and its back nine a year later. Ron Flack bought the club in 2004 for $4.8 million, according to Larimer County records. According to Ptarmigan’s website, Ron Flack and his son Ryan renovated parts of the clubhouse, which was built in 1996. Ryan Flack put the course up for sale this year after his father’s death on June 25.

“This exceptional property enhances our growing portfolio,” Scott McMartin, chief acquisitions officer for Heritage Golf Group, said in a prepared statement. “The Flack family has built an outstanding legacy over the past 20+ years, and we are honored to carry it forward and build upon their foundation.”

Heritage acquired the Colorado National Golf Club at 2700 Vista Parkway in Erie in 2002, as well as the Club at Bear Dance in Larkspur and Plum Creek Golf Club in Castle Rock. The group also owns country clubs in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Michigan and Wisconsin.

With about 400 members, Ptarmigan Country Club features the championship golf course with 100 feet of elevation change, rolling topography and five sets of tees. The club also has a driving range, practice greens and chipping area, lighted tennis and pickleball courts, a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool and private dining. It has active men’s and women’s leagues, social and competitive events, junior programming and lessons, and hosts tournaments for Colorado State University’s golf team including last fall’s Ptarmigan Ram Classic. Qualifying events for the U.S. Open golf tournament were held there in 1991 and 1993, and the course hosts frequent charity events for local nonprofits such as WomenGive and Realities for Children.

The two-level clubhouse has multiple dining areas, private event spaces, a fireside bar and lounge, an outdoor patio, and locker rooms.

“It has been a pleasure working with Heritage Golf Group on the purchase of Ptarmigan Country Club,” Ryan Flack said in a news release. “Heritage brings invaluable knowledge and resources that will further elevate this outstanding club. I’m excited to see the continued growth and success of the Ptarmigan family culture in the years ahead.”

Heritage’s Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, designed by golf course architect Jay Morrish, is set on more than 232 acres within the Vista Ridge Residential Community and is home to the University of Colorado Boulder’s men’s and women’s golf teams.
