A1 Organics, Heartland Biogas complete $3.5M facility expansion
LASALLE — Eaton-based A1 Organics and Heartland Biogas LLC have completed a $3.5 million addition to the biogas digester system at the Heartland Biogas Digestion facility near LaSalle that turns food waste into natural gas.
The facility is owned by Heartland Biogas, a subsidiary of EDF Renewable Energy, formerly enXco Development Corp., an independent power producer based in San Diego, Calif., that has an office in in Denver.
A1 Organics has a 20-year facility lease and is under contract to supply a wide variety of organic food waste for the plant, said Chuck Wilson, A1 Organic’s chief executive.

The new processor turns solid food waste into a slurry that is pumped into the digester that is converted to natural gas. A1 Organics pumps between 200,000 and 250,000 gallons of the slurry per day to the biogas reactors, Wilson said. The company uses a machine called The Tiger that separates food waste from cans, plastics and paper packaging.
Heartland is under contract to provide natural gas to the city of Sacramento.
