Report: Colorado companies attracted $16.1B in venture capital in ’16

Colorado ranked No. 10 nationally in attracting private-equity investment in 2016, according to a report released Thursday by the American Investment Council based in Washington, D.C.

According to the findings, 125 companies in Colorado last year received $16.1 billion in capital investments supporting 18,265 jobs. This is an improvement of six spots compared to 2015, when Colorado ranked 16th in capital investments.

Colorado’s 1st congressional district, represented by Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, received $6.68 billion and ranked No. 11 among districts in the country receiving private-equity investment. The bulk of the district is made up of the city and county of Denver.

The congressional district receiving the most private-equity investment is in Massachusetts, and California has four districts in the top 20.

The top nine states for having companies that received private-equity funding, according to the report, are Texas, 413 companies received $79.8 billion; California, 522 companies, $77.2 billion; Massachusetts, 152 companies, $76.7 billion;  Florida, 219 companies,$41.8 billion; New York, 246 companies, $39.7 billion; Pennsylvania, 158 companies, $29.4 billion; Illinois, 164 companies, $22.6 billion; Georgia, 143 companies,  $21.8 billion; and Ohio 107 companies, $17 billion.

In all, private-equity firms invested more than $645 billion in more than 3,765 U.S.-based companies last year.
