Denver’s Prost Brewing eyeing possibility of Fort Collins tasting room

FORT COLLINS – The owners of Prost Brewing Co. in Denver have submitted a concept review application with the city of Fort Collins to open a tasting room at 404 Linden St.

But one partner said Friday that it’s still uncertain whether the brewery will actually move forward with the site, saying there are several variables to examine to determine whether the location would be suitable.

“It’s basically an exploratory look at a property up there,” said Troy Johnston, one of Prost’s co-owners. “It was just an idea.”

Prost opened in 2012 at 2540 19th St. in Denver with a focus on German-style beers. Johnston said about half of Prost’s owners live or went to school in Fort Collins, helping spur the peek at the property, which is a portion of the El Burrito restaurant building that is being used for storage.

The property Prost is looking at is about 1,000 square feet, and Johnston said that if the company moved forward, the facility would be a tasting room only and not used for production.

Earlier this year the owners of Mobb Mountain Distillers announced their own plans to open in a portion of the El Burrito building adjacent to the part Prost is looking at. Mobb Mountain, which is expected to open later this spring, will be directly on the corner of Linden and Willow streets, while the space Prost is looking at is on the back side of the building along Willow.

Johnston said Prost filed the concept review to get an idea of what it would take to open at the site and what the costs would be. One of the things Prost mentioned in its review application is moving the curb cut on Willow to improve access to the parking lot.

In addition, Clay Frickey, an associate planner with the city, said that the city has a development agreement with El Burrito’s owners, who also own the property, stipulating that if any further changes are made to the site that the owners are responsible for certain sidewalk and infrastructure improvements.
