Family, medical leave legislation benefiting workers, businesses

U.S. workers are benefiting from the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), according to the results of a survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The results of the survey, which reports not only on respondent opinions of the FMLA, but also other medical and family leave policies, were released in a report entitled Balancing the Needs of Families and Employers.

The results showed both employer and employee support for the policies enacted by the FMLA. Approximately 80 percent of respondents reported that providing family or medical leave resulted in either positive or no noticeable impact on company productivity, profits or growth.

Empowering communities

Rocky Mountain Health Plans (RMHP), part of the UnitedHealthcare family, has pledged its commitment to uplift these communities through substantial investments in organizations addressing the distinct needs of our communities.

The FMLA allows workers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a seriously ill child, spouse or parent, or to care for a newborn or newly adopted child without risking their jobs. The act also allows workers to take that time to tend to their own health needs. More than six in 10 U.S. workers are eligible under the act.
