House speaker praises Greeley transportation employee

House Speaker Mark Ferrandino, D-Denver, in a speech Wednesday opening the 2014 session of the state House of Representatives, lauded a Greeley Colorado Department of Transportation employee’s efforts during the September flood.

Keith Sheaffer, a Greeley Program Engineer with the transportation department, served as the operations lead for rebuilding roads.

In addition to overseeing the road-building effort, Sheaffer spent many of his weekends visiting town halls and other events in order to keep the public informed on CDOT’s progress and what to expect in the future.

Platte River must prepare for the retirement of 431 megawatts (MW) of dispatchable, coal-fired generation by the end of the decade and address more frequent extreme weather events that can bring dark calms (periods when there is no sun or wind).

“Keith went above and beyond the call of duty in helping to keep the public informed throughout the recovery process,´ said Rep. Dave Young (D-Greeley), who is co-chairman of the bipartisan Flood Disaster Study Committee. “His and everyone at CDOT’s commitment is why all roads opened ahead of schedule.”

Ferrandino said that bills designed to assist with flood recovery and prevention will be the first taken up this legislative session.
