5 area breweries win medals at U.S. Open Beer Championship

OXFORD, Ohio — Five breweries in the Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado have been awarded medals in the U.S. Open Beer Championship, with Liquid Mechanics Brewing Co. in Lafayette and Gilded Goat Brewing Co. in Fort Collins nabbing two each.

The competition, held annually in Oxford, features entries across more than 180 styles from professional and award-winning home brewers across the globe. It ranks as the third-largest professional beer competition in the country.

Judging took place in late June, and the winners were announced last Wednesday. Colorado breweries collected a total of 30 medals, including 13 golds, nine silvers and eight bronzes.

Liquid Mechanics won a gold medal in the American strong pale ale category for its Lucid AF and a bronze in the American Stout category for its Creamy Fookin’ Pints. That beer also received special recognition for one of the competition’s most humorously named beers.

Gilded Goat took gold in the Belgian lambic and miscellaneous category for its Professor Funk 601, and silver in the fruited wheat beer – tangerine competition for its Meandering Wheat.

Lafayette-based Cellar West Brewery won a gold medal in the English summer ale competition for its Sasquatch Slobber, Mythmaker Brewing in Fort Collins claimed a silver medal in the brown porter category for its porter, and Pumphouse Brewery in Longmont took bronze in the foreign stout category for its Spotted Dog Stout.
