Boulder startup Occipital co-founders depart executive spots

BOULDER — The founders of Boulder-based computing startup Occipital Inc. have left the company’s day-to-day operations.

In two separate blog posts this week, co-founders Jeff Powers and Vikas Reddy said they are departing the company’s executive positions but would remain on the company’s board and have a voice in choosing the next CEO.

It’s not clear why the two are leaving the company’s top posts, or who will run the company in the interim. In his post, Powers briefly alluded to the leadership switch.

“As things go in the business world, sometimes companies decide to change leadership, even if that means the founders have to depart, and that’s what happened to us,” he wrote.

Powers, Reddy and board member Jason Mendelson did not respond to requests for interviews Thursday afternoon.

Powers also alluded to a new venture he’s starting along with eight Occipital alumni called Arcturus Industries. Its website is scant on details but mentions it is in the virtual-reality and augmented-reality sector.

Occipital was founded 12 years ago with seed backing from Techstars and has since raised a total of $38.1 million in capital, according to Crunchbase data.

The company focuses on “spatial computing,” an umbrella term to denote computers and sensors that can interpret images, such as barcodes, or building 3D models via a panoramic video. Recently, its focuses have been on products that allow smartphone cameras to build 3D models of a home’s interior and a 3D scanner for making custom orthotics and prosthetics.

It currently has 67 employees across offices in Boulder, San Francisco, Madrid and Gainesville, Florida, according to LinkedIn data.
