Catholic hospital chains in Colorado, California merge

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that the new organization, to be based in Chicago, will own 139 hospitals and employ 159,000 people in 28 states.

The deal is not expected to affect patient care or employees of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, which operates Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center in Colorado Springs, said Michael Romano, a Catholic Health Initiatives spokesman in Englewood. Penrose and St.Francis are part of the Centura network, which includes Longmont United Hospital and Avista Adventist Hospital in the Louisville.
