U.S. Attorney for Colorado stepping down

DENVER — John Walsh, the U.S. Attorney for Colorado, said Friday he is stepping down from the job he has held for the past six years, allowing the next president to have time for a smooth transition to find his replacement.

Walsh told news outlets that he will return to private practice. He spent 15 years in private practice in Denver before being appointed by President Obama in 2010.

Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch said in a prepared statement that Walsh has “protected our civil liberties, defended our national security and aggressively and successfully prosecuted organized crime, drug cartels and gang violence.
