4 startups with Boulder County ties make SXSW Eco finals

Fresh off of landing new research funding and new lab space, University of Colorado spinoff Mallinda LLC is one of four startups with local ties named finalists this week for the South by Southwest Eco Startup Showcase.

The Startup Showcase is a pitch competition that highlights early-stage companies in the several categories: Energy; Internet of Things and Software; Reuse and Recycling; Social Impact; Supply Chain and Product Innovation; Water; and International Innovations.

The event takes place Oct. 5-7 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. Boulder-based clean chemistry company New Sky Energy won the Greentech category at the event in 2013.

Mallinda – which is developing a moldable and remoldable carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic that is recyclable – is a finalist in this year’s Supply Chain and Innovation category. The company was spun off from CU technology by Chris Kaffer and Philip Taynton.

The other local companies named finalists for SXSW Eco this year include:

Quanta3, Longmont, Energy category: Developing high-precision laser sensors for mitigating methane emissions.

Sustainable Power Systems Inc., Boulder, Energy category: Maker of a Universal Microgrid Controller for the growing commercial and industrial facility microgrid market.

Amp Robotics, Boulder, Reuse and Recycling category: Creates autonomous systems that help improve the economics of recycling.
