Boulder council to weigh even stricter building height ordinance

The Boulder city council will hold a special meeting tonight for a public hearing and second reading of an ordinance that would tighten the height limits for newly constructed buildings.

The Daily Camera reports that a new version of the height ordinance that is even more strict than the one approved on first reading last month will be considered. The new version, suggested by the planning board, would allow no new building to be built within the city limits for the next two years that is taller than 38 feet downtown or 35 feet elsewhere. The ordinance makes an exception for the Frasier Meadows retirement community expansion.

Boulder currently allows builders to request exemptions to zoned height limits to construct buildings up to 55 feet tall. But a building boom in Boulder and proliferation of new 55-foot-tall developments has caused outcry from some in the community. City council last month approved on first reading an ordinance that would disallow height exceptions anywhere in town except for five specific areas, including downtown.
