GitHub Inc. unwraps new Boulder office

BOULDER – San Francisco-based GitHub Inc., which provides an online platform for sharing programming code, is hosting a “Patchwork” event tonight as part of a public unveiling of its new Boulder office.

The Boulder office, at 1300 Walnut St., is just the second for GitHub, where about 60 percent of the 230 employees work remotely away from the San Francisco office.  The company moved into its 3,500-square-foot Boulder space in the spring but just recently finished renovating the space.

The patchwork event runs from 6 to 9:30 p.m., and will provide an introduction for anyone interested in using the Git tool, on top of which GitHub’s platform is built.

GitHub has 12 employees who live in Colorado, most of whom worked here before the Boulder office opened. Nathan Sobo, a programmer, is one of those employees who had been working remotely. He now spends a good chunk of his time at the new office.

Right now, about six employees work at the new office each day. But Sobo said that’s expected to grow.

“We definitely anticipate (current GitHub employees living elsewhere) coming here, and we definitely anticipate hiring here,” Sobo said. “But we don’t have any rigid plans.”

Sobo said the company’s strategy when it comes to adding physical offices is to build them where there is already a concentration of employees or where people want to be. In addition to the local employees, a fair amount from other areas have already dropped in to check out the Boulder area and co-work there while in town.
