Boulder, Fort Collins-Loveland rank high on low obesity-rate list

BOULDER – Boulder and Fort Collins-Loveland have ranked as two of the top three metropolitan areas with the lowest obesity rates in the state, according to a new Gallup poll.

Boulder once again took the top spot on the list, with the lowest obesity rate in the country at 12.4 percent. Following right behind Boulder is the Naples-Marco Island metro area in Florida, with a 16.5 percent obesity rate.

Fort Collins-Loveland ranked third on the list, with an obesity rate of 18.2 percent. The Denver-Aurora area was No. 7, with 19.3 percent of the population obese.

Data for the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index was collected between January 2012 and December 2013.

Boulder has had the lowest obesity rate of the communities on the index since the Gallup began surveying in 2008, with the exception of 2009, according to Gallup.

Mississippi and West Virginia were found to be the states with the highest obesity rates, while Montana and Colorado had the lowest.

Data for the index are collected through self-reporting of height and weight to calculate Body Mass Index, or BMI scores. A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.
